“You are salt for the world…”
Matt 5:13
Catholic Schools Week was a wonderful celebration at St. Benedict School. We were blessed with good weather and great participation in all our events. Thanks to the many parents, grandparents and community members who joined us for mass and lunch. Special thanks to all the parents and PTO members for making sure we had what was needed. The investment of time and talent by our staff and volunteers is not only appreciated during Catholic Schools week, but all year long!
Friday – Family Game Night was a lot of fun for the 100+ who attended. Thanks to our Enrollment and Retention Director, Erica Miley for organizing a great event.
Saturday and Sunday I had the privilege to speak to the parishioners of Little Flower Parish about the examples of how students are responding to God’s call to learn, serve, lead and succeed at St. Benedict School. What a positive and supportive response received from the parishioners who continually support the work of our school. It was nice to see a some of our school families at church over the weekend.
Monday we celebrated our community. Students went with their buddies to tour the new Sunshine Community home. They got to see where their new buddies will be living. Canned goods and personal hygiene projects were collected for the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry. Each classroom has also selected a service project to conduct during Lent. The project will reflect one of the Corporal or Spiritual Works of Mercy.
Tuesday we celebrated our students and families. At Mass, Fr. Dave spoke about the importance of “being salt for the world, adding flavor and zest to everything we do!” Students and teachers participated in a friendly Quiz Bowl competition, with the students earning “bragging rights” for the day!
Wednesday we remembered the importance of Catholic Schools in our nation. Students wore red, white and blue to signify the importance of being faith-filled citizens. Our family celebration continued with a capacity crowd in our gym for Parent Lunch. PTO surprised the students with an ice cream treat for dessert.
Thursday we talked and listened to others as they shared feelings about their vocations and how faith guides them in their work. Thanks to the staff members, parents and parishioners who came to present at Career Day.
Tomorrow is Teacher, Staff and Volunteer celebration day! One of the best ways a student can show appreciation for their teacher is to demonstrate the lessons of living, loving and learning in which they have been instructed! PTO will provide a delicious lunch to our faculty and staff in appreciation for all they do!
Saturday and Sunday will provide another opportunity to attend weekend liturgies and share our Good News with parishioners at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. I hope to see many school families this weekend.

Valentine’s Day
This year, February 14th, Valentine’s Day is also Ash Wednesday. Since this marks the first day of Lent, any parties or celebrations will be held on Tuesday, February 13th(also known as Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday.) I know that not all the fasting and abstinence rules apply to students under 12 but as a Catholic School, we need to be cognizant and mindful of the meaning of Ash Wednesday and what it means to sacrifice during Lent. Thank you for your understanding.
