Thursday Thoughts from Mrs. Hartman

“ Everything that happens in this world happens at the time God chooses.”

Ecclesiastes 3:1

We are blessed at St. Benedict Catholic School to be co-sponsored by two very supportive parishes; Little Flower and Our Lady of Lourdes Parishes. The support includes the leadership and guidance of the parish pastors, Fr. David Nuss and Fr. Joseph Cardone. In addition to their regular assigned duties, each pastor alternates two year terms as the local superintendent of St. Benedict Catholic School. Again we have been blessed with two priests who truly believe in Catholic education. Unfortunately, we will have to say goodbye to Fr. Cardone very soon. Bishop Daniel E. Thomas has made the following announcement this past weekend:

“Very Reverend Joseph P. Cardone, VF, has been released for service in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati as Chief Mission Officer and Senior Vice-President of Mission and Values Integration, Mercy Health, Cincinnati, Ohio, effective 1 November 2017. Father Cardone remains Pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Toledo, and Dean of the Saint Luke Deanery until a successor is appointed by Bishop Thomas.”

Additionally, Fr. Cardone will remain as local superintendent for St. Benedict School until a new pastor is appointed however, his last school mass will be celebrated next Tuesday, October, 24th at 8:15 am. As always, all are welcome. I know you will join me and the St. Benedict staff as we say thank you and continue to pray for Father as he continues his ministry in Cincinnati.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Report cards will be sent home on Friday, October 20th. Additionally, Fall MAP results and other important assessment information will be included in the envelope. Parent Teacher Conferences will be held October 26 and 27. All conferences will be after school so school will be in session both days. THERE IS NO SCHOOL ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2016.

The conference request form was sent home last week and times were scheduled Students in grades Pre/K – 5 on a first come first served basis. The forms that were received by school are being returned with the scheduled days and times in today’s Thursday envelope. If there is any family still needing a conference time, please contact the child’s teacher for available times.

Students in will Grades 6-8 come with parents for a student-led conference in the gym on Wednesday evening, October 26, between 5:00 pm. to 8:00 pm. In most cases, parents and students will also meet with the homeroom teacher. Parents of middle school students will be receiving additional information regarding these conferences from classroom teachers. Appointments are not necessary, as all the middle school teachers will be available during those times.

Title I Tutoring

We are fortunate to be able to provide tutoring in Reading and Math because of equitable services through the Federal Title I Grant program. We will begin with a focus on Reading and add Math as time permits. Students are identified through MAP testing and classroom teacher recommendation. This year, Ms. Sarah Hafner will be at St. Benedict School on Thursdays and Fridays to work with students during the school day. Ms. Hafner is a licensed teacher with several years of classroom experience.

Students who will greatly benefit from extra tutoring will receive permission slips in the Thursday envelope today! Please know this will be a benefit that will help many students be successful. We ask that you sign and return permission forms so the assistance can begin as soon as possible.

Trunk or Treat

Trunk or Treat is a fun Halloween family event. Families may choose to decorate their cars and distribute
candy from the trunk or just bring their trick or treaters to participate in the fun. CHILDREN SHOULD NOT BE
DROPPED OFF AND MUST BE SUPERVISED THROUGHOUT THE EVENING.

The date for Trunk or Treat has been changed to Saturday, October 21st. Set up begins at 6:00 (following the 4:30 pm Little Flower Mass) and Trunk or Treating begins at 6:30.

Book Fair is Coming

St. Benedict School will host a Scholastic Book Fair the Week of October 23rd. This is the week of Parent Teacher Conferences so parents may want to do some “Christmas shopping.”

Thanks to all those who have volunteered to help. Volunteers are still needed for time slots during P/T Conferences. Please contact Miss Gregory is you can help. (tgregory@stbenedicttoledo.org)

PLEASE NOTE: When dropping students off at the gym doors in the morning, there should be ONE line of traffic along the sidewalk. PLEASE DO NOT pull out of line until the car in front of you moves. This is a dangerous practice and several near accidents have been observed.
WE APPRECIATE YOUR HELP IN KEEPING OUR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES SAFE!
