Thursday Thoughts from Mrs. Hartman

“Grandchildren are the crown of grandparents,
And parents are the glory of their children.”
Proverbs 17:6

What a wonderful day we had celebrating and sharing time with our grandparents and special friends. Beginning with the celebration of the Mass, Fr. Dave reminded us of the special place these wonderful people have in our lives. Students and grandparents alike enjoyed the doughnuts and refreshments provided by our PTO. The gym was adorned with heartfelt messages on placements reminding our grandparents they are a gift from God. Teachers welcomed grandparents to their rooms where students proudly shared their accomplishments. The blessings of this day are too numerous to count and we are so happy to be able to celebrate these special people in our school family.

Parent/Teacher Conferences

The first quarter of the school year ends Friday, October 13th. Report cards will be sent home on Friday, October 20th. Parent Teacher Conferences will be held October 26 and 27. All conferences will be after school so school will be in session both days. THERE IS NO SCHOOL ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 28, 2016.

The conference request form is attached and should be returned by Wednesday, October 18th. We hope to have 100% attendance. Students in grades Pre/K – 5 will be scheduled a time to meet with classroom teachers afterschool on either Wednesday or Thursday, in the order in which the forms are received back to school.

Students in Grades 6-8 will come with parents for a student-led conference in the gym on Wednesday evening, October 26, between 5:00 pm. to 8:00 pm. Parents of middle school students will be receiving additional information regarding these conferences from classroom teachers. Appointments are not necessary, as all the middle school teachers will be available during those times.

Title I Tutoring

We are fortunate to be able to provide tutoring in Reading and Math because of equitable services through the Federal Title I Grant program. We will begin with a focus on Reading and add Math as time permits. Students are identified through MAP testing and classroom teacher recommendation. This year, Ms. Sarah Hafner will be at St. Benedict School on Thursdays and Fridays to work with students during the school day. Ms. Hafner is a licensed teacher with several years of classroom experience.

Students who will greatly benefit from extra tutoring will receive permission slips in the Thursday envelope today! Please know this will be a benefit that will help many students be successful. We ask that you sign and return permission forms so the assistance can begin as soon as possible.

Book Fair is Coming

St. Benedict School will host a Scholastic Book Fair the Week of October 23rd. This is the week of Parent Teacher Conferences so parents may want to do some “Christmas shopping.” More details on times and procedures will follow.

Thanks to all those who have volunteered to help. Volunteers are needed for a few empty time slots.

Trunk or Treat

Trunk or Treat is a fun Halloween family event. Families may choose to decorate their cars and distribute
candy from the trunk or just bring their trick or treaters to participate in the fun. CHILDREN SHOULD NOT BE
DROPPED OFF AND MUST BE SUPERVISED THROUGHOUT THE EVENING.

The date for Trunk or Treat has been changed to Saturday, October 21st. Set up begins at 6:00 (following the 4:30 pm Little Flower Mass) and Trunk or Treating begins at 6:30. Please complete the survey sent out by PTO.

Home Improvement
On Thursday, October 12, we invite all parents/grandparents to join us for our next session of Home Improvement: Family Edition! Our topic Making the Grade: Education and Family Life will challenge and invite each of us to explore how we continue to learn each and every day and how we support our family members to do the same. We meet in the O’Grady Community Center (Gym) at 6:15 for a short presentation, followed by discussion and sharing. Childcare provided for ages 0-3; Catechesis of the Good Shepherd for children ages 4-6; activities for older children. Invite someone to join you for these 90 minutes that can make a real difference in your family life!

PLEASE NOTE: When dropping students off at the gym doors in the morning, there should be ONE line of traffic along the sidewalk. PLEASE DO NOT pull out of line until the car in front of you moves. This is a dangerous practice and several near accidents have been observed.
WE APPRECIATE YOUR HELP IN KEEPING OUR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES SAFE!
