“Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.”
St. Francis of Assisi
Fall is here! Now that the weather is beginning to change, we ask that all students are following the “Regular School Dress Code” as found in the Family Handbook. I would like to highlight a few items of which we ask all students and families to make special note:
SWEATERS Red, white, or black sweaters—cardigan, vest, or pullover.
The ONLY sweatshirt/fleece that may be worn are the “official” St. Benedict embroidered styles.
SOCKS Solid red, black or white knee socks, tights, leggings, anklets are permitted. Socks must be worn with shoes at all times and must show above the shoes.
SHOES PLEASE CHOOSE NON-ATHLETIC SHOES—no logo—to be worn with the regular school uniform.
WHEN WEARING THE REGULAR UNIFORM (NOT SUMMER) ATHLETIC SHOES NO MATTER WHAT COLOR ARE NOT PERMITTED.
NON-ATHLETIC SHOES refers to shoes of the “gym style” also referred to as tennis,
basketball, or running shoes.
NO LOGO refers to Nike, Adidas, Jordan’s, Converse, etc….
One might ask, “Why is this such a big issue?” I once again highlight the section of the Family Handbook to reiterate the rationale for a Dress Code at St. Benedict Catholic School:
It is the policy of St. Benedict Catholic School that all students K – 8 wear uniforms. School uniforms have a direct bearing on discipline and creation of a desirable atmosphere for learning. Our school uniform fosters unity and pride in being a St. Benedict Catholic School student while focusing on Catholic teachings and academics. Students in Kindergarten through 8th grade are expected to follow the dress code (Preschool students are not required to wear uniforms). Respect for the dress code and neatness in dress sets a tone of serious commitment to a learning environment. Parents/guardians are encouraged to help enforce this dress code.
School uniforms can be purchased through our preferred vendor, SchoolBelles, which is located across from Elder Beerman on Secor Road. The St. Benedict Catholic School Dress Code Policy can be found in Appendix D located at the back of this handbook.
Students who disregard the dress code will be removed from the classroom. The Principal and/or School Office will notify parents/guardians. The student will sit in the office until the appropriate uniform is brought to school.
The Principal will determine necessary dress for out of school functions or special occasions.
The Principal shall have the authority to make immediate decisions as to what is and is not acceptable in the way of dress and grooming.
There may be occasions when the students are not required to wear uniforms, such as field trips, class trips, etc.
Thank you for assisting us in helping our students develop the self-discipline necessary to be successful!
Parent/Teacher Conferences
The first quarter of the school year ends Friday, October 13 (Yes…. we can’t believe it either!) Report cards will be sent home on Friday, October 20th
.
Parent/Teacher Conferences are October 25 – 26, 2017. All conferences will be after school so school will be in
session both days. THERE IS NO SCHOOL ON FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27TH. More information and sign-up sheets for Parent/Teacher Conferences will be sent home in next week’s Thursday Thought.
Grandparent’s Day
Next Tuesday, October 10th, we will be blessed with the presence of grandparents and special friends of our students. This is always a highlight of any school year and we look forward to celebrating these special people in our lives.
The day will begin with our school Mass at 8:15 am. Grandparents are asked to park in the church parking lot
and meet their grandchildren in church prior to 8:15. Grandparents and students may sit together for Mass.
Following mass, the students will treat their special guests to a breakfast in the gym. This is sponsored by the
PTO and any help would be greatly appreciated. Grandparents’ Day will end at 10:25 since the first
recess/lunch period begins at that time. Please pass along all of this important information to your child’s
loved ones.
Trunk or Treat
Trunk or Treat is a fun Halloween family event. Families may choose to decorate their cars and distribute
candy from the trunk or just bring their trick or treaters to participate in the fun. CHILDREN SHOULD NOT BE
DROPPED OFF AND MUST BE SUPERVISED THROUGHOUT THE EVENING.
The date for Trunk or Treat has been changed to Saturday, October 21st. Set up begins at 6:00 (following the 4:30 pm Little Flower Mass) and Trunk or Treating begins at 6:30. Please complete the survey sent out by PTO.
Home Improvement
On Thursday, October 12, we invite all parents/grandparents to join us for our next session of Home Improvement: Family Edition! Our topic Making the Grade: Education and Family Life will challenge and invite each of us to explore how we continue to learn each and every day and how we support our family members to do the same. We meet in the O’Grady Community Center (Gym) at 6:15 for a short presentation, followed by discussion and sharing. Childcare provided for ages 0-3; Catechesis of the Good Shepherd for children ages 4-6; activities for older children. Invite someone to join you for these 90 minutes that can make a real difference in your family life!
